Academic discourse studies have grown up as an important topic in applied linguistics, driven by an interest in linguistic features of academic texts and a desire for pedagogical effectiveness. While this strand of research rests on corpora for naturally occurring samples of language, they are often criticized for decontextualizing instances of language use from their original communicative settings (e.g. Myers, 1999; Widdowson, 2000). In this presentation, by drawing on a recent project of postgraduates’ writing and understanding of reader engagement in research genre for assessment, I speak of discourse-based interview as an effective way to recontextualize corpus-based examination while reviewing other possible approaches. In the project, corpus analysis shows that compared with the published research articles, the PhD students made a less use of engagement features, especially those which impose most heavily on readers, but relied on the resources which claim relatively less authority over readers. However, from the interviews with the student informants, we see that they typically assumed an inferiority of scholarly status and authority to the reader examiners, and this motivates the PhD students to be cautious and pragmatic in the choice of addressee devices. This points to the value of recontextualizing corpus-based analysis of academic discourse.
